ABOUT US
Guardians of the TCM legacy pioneered by esteemed Physician Chan Chee Yan
Physician Chan Chee Yan (PJK) was a visionary practitioner of Chinese medicine. A distinguished graduate of Malaysia’s Traditional Chinese Medical Institute, he earned honors in both Internal Medicine and Acupuncture—a testament to his exceptional expertise. Throughout his lifetime, Physician Chan’s mastery earned profound trust within local communities and solidified his reputation for compassionate, effective care. His enduring contributions advanced the practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine across Malaysia, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire YUAN TCM today
1958
Beyond his visionary TCM practice, Physician Chan Chee Yan served as Secretary of the Kuala Lumpur Buddhist Society—a testament to his devotion to community well-being. This holistic leadership mirrored his medical philosophy: healing rooted in compassion and selflessness.
1960
Physician Chan Chee Yan’s dedication extended far beyond clinical practice. As a Volunteer Physician at Kuala Lumpur’s Chinese Medical Aid Department, he brought his honed expertise to underserved communities—embodying the heart of "yi zhe ren xin" (医者仁心, the healer’s benevolent spirit). This selfless service mirrored his lifelong mission: making TCM’s healing power accessible to all
1964
Beyond his clinical mastery, Physician Chan Chee Yan shaped TCM’s future as Appointed Professor at the Penang Chinese Physician Association mentoring generations of practitioners. This academic leadership, paired with his community service and visionary practice, cements his legacy as a pillar of Malaysian Chinese medicine
1965
Physician Chan Chee Yan further distinguished his career as a first-class honours registered Physician at Lam Wah Ee Hospital - one of Malaysia’s most revered TCM institutions. Recruited for his exceptional skill, he blended scholarly rigor with compassionate care, setting new standards for clinical excellence in Chinese medicine
1973
Physician Chan Chee Yan fortified TCM’s foundations through leadership: Principal and Lecturer of the Penang Chinese Association (until 1988) and Steward of General Affairs at the Penang Chinese Physician & Druggist Association. These dual roles—shaping education and managing institutional excellence—cemented his legacy as a guardian of tradition and a bridge between scholarly and practical healing
1977
Beyond medicine, Physician Chan Chee Yan embodied the unity of body and spirit as President & Consultant of the Yueh Fei Martial Art Club. His leadership in wushu reflected the same principles guiding his TCM practice: discipline, balance, and the cultivation of vital energy (qi). At Yuan, we honor this harmony of movement and healing
1978
Beyond spreadsheets and ledgers, Physician Chan Chee Yan embodies the convergence of precision and tradition as Deputy CFO of the Wushu, Lion and Dragon Dance Association, Penang. Guiding the financial pulse of this heritage organization mirrors the discipline of wushu itself: where strategic balance, resilient flow, and respect for legacy transform numbers into cultural vitality. In the dance of dragons and the roar of lions, we honor this fusion—where every ringgit safeguarded breathes life into centuries of art
1979
Beyond ledgers and bylaws, Chan Chee Yan embodies the bridge between tradition and enterprise across Penang’s Cantonese community. As Strategic Secretary of the Phun Yue Association, they wove kinship into organizational vitality. Their influence deepened as an esteemed Member of The Cantonese Merchants’ Association, harmonizing ancestral business wisdom with modern commerce. Finally, as Consultant to the Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Merchants Association, they honored qi (气)—the lifeblood of both healing herbs and community resilience—proving that true leadership thrives where culture, trade, and stewardship converge
1980
Awarded the Pingat Jasa Masyarakat (PJM) by His Excellency the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Penang, in recognition of meritorious service to community and heritage
1982
Conferred the Pingat Jasa Kebaktian (PJK) by His Excellency the Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Penang, in recognition of distinguished service to society
1989 - 2023
As Founding Principal & Lecturer of the Penang Chinese Physician Association (serving until 2004), Chan Chee Yan did not merely teach medicine—they cultivated heritage. Guiding generations of physicians in the art of TCM, they rooted practice in the wisdom of qi (气) and balance, just as a master stewards a forest. Their dual role—architect of the institute’s vision and keeper of its scholarly soul—forged a sanctuary where pulse readings echoed ancestral truths. Long after their tenure, this foundation still breathes life into Penang’s healing traditions
1992 - 2019
From lecturing in Hong Kong’s academic halls to kneeling at temple clinics in Penang, Chan Chee Yan’s journey wove scholarship and service into one breath. Their 1992 TCM address in Hong Kong echoed the same philosophy guiding their volunteer work: that healing is where 仁 (rén, benevolence) meets 术 (shù, skill). At the Penang Buddhist Association, this harmony lived—as Counsellor and Chief Physician, they turned herbs into hope, proving medicine’s highest form is mercy made tangible
2023 - The Seed Becomes the Forest: Yuan TCM
In 2023, Chan Chee Yan’s legacy took root anew. His son founded Yuan TCM (源中医)—yuán (源) meaning “source” or “origin”—a sanctuary where the ancient river of his father’s wisdom flows into modern shores. Here, tradition is not preserved behind glass but lived: the same hands that once pulsed temple patients across SEA now extend through generations.
Yuan’s mission breathes twofold:
-
To honor the source (尊崇本源) — Chan Chee Yan’s lifelong devotion to rén shù (仁术, the art of compassionate healing), from founding the Penang Chinese Physician Association to serving as a beacon at Hong Kong’s academic exchanges.
-
To evolve with grace — Creating serene, contemporary spaces where TCM’s soul remains untouched, yet its reach embraces all. At Yuan, incense shares space with soft light; herbal cabinets stand beside quiet consultation rooms. It is tradition made accessible, where qi (气) harmonizes with modern life.
